This section will give you an idea of what you can expect if you are accepted into New Hope Assistance Dogs' program. If at anytime you have a question or concern through the application, training, or follow-up process, feel free to ask and we will do what we can to help. There is also a page of frequently asked questions regarding the process after you've been accepted into the program which can be found here.

There will be a two week training period where you will meet the dog we have selected, and learn how to work with that service dog in a variety of places. An average day during this training period will include about 5 to 6 hours of training which will include lectures, and hands on learning. When possible we will include several clients who are training with similarly trained service dogs. Clients are encouraged to practice and apply what they have learned in their daily training sessions during their two week training period in their off time outside of training.

You will need to arrange for transportation to and from our facility, for not only the onsite training, but also for outings that will occur as part of the training session.

Out of pocket expenses you can expect will include ....

Transportation

Gas, airplane tickets, car rental ... etc. to and from the facility, hotel, and any training related outings.

Lodging

High-end estimate, before discounts, is approximately $1830.50
($130.75 x 14 days includes tax)

Visit All-Hotels.com to find out about room availability and pricing at several Hotels in the Warren area.

Meals

Price varies depending on if you go with fast food or sit down style restaurant.

Personal Aide

Arranged for and provided by you along with all travel expenses for this person.

Out of pocket expenses vary depending on where the Client is coming from and what arrangements they make based on their own individual needs, so the amounts listed above are estimates based on someone who has to travel a greater distance.

After you and your Service Dog have graduated, there are still things we need to do to ensure that you and your service dog are working well together and that there aren't any concerns once you start working your dog in your home area.

The things that follow Graduation include ...

  • Weekly follow-up by phone with the team for the first month which will decrease to monthly for the following 3 to 4 month
  • During the first year after graduation, each team is required to attend two obedience sessions lasting 6 to 8 weeks with an approved trainer who will perform the required evaluation of your progress.
  • At the team's one year anniversary of their graduation date, the Client will need to complete a self-evaluation and include copies of vet records for their service dog.
  • Completion of a certification test which is done usually every one or two years. For those who live outside of a 200 mile radius of New Hope, this test can be done by video. This certification must be retained through New Hope for the working life of the dog.
  • You will also be responsible for making sure your service dog is fed at the proper times and maintains a healthy weight, along with preventing fleas and tics, and any other care recommended by your vet.
